I can’t tell you how many times I heard this when working at large companies.
There are people who naturally think this way. The bottom-up thinkers.
They are also the people who struggle with interview questions like: tell me about yourself.
To a bottom-up thinker that can be a paralyzing question. Where do you begin?
“Proper” eye contact can also be a problem.
Perhaps, if the interview process was centered on finding the person who can best do a job vs measuring a performance, organizations would have more of the people who naturally think differently.
The challenge I find with pointing this out is it’s difficult to hear. You get labeled as difficult. The problem.
It challenges the way it has been done.
Research has shown structured interviews are much more effective than relying on gut feel or culture fit which is mostly, is this person like me, do they mirror me.
Most organizations opt for the traditional interview, filter out the bottom-up thinkers while at the same time saying they need to think outside the box.
Going forward the question will be: who is going to see problems with ai results? Who is going to point out these problems?
The same people who can’t survive the traditional interview process.
